The use of harm reduction tools, such as e-cigarettes, is a crucial strategy to tackle the harm caused by traditional smoking. By eliminating tobacco combustion, these devices significantly reduce exposure to carcinogenic and toxic substances. Harnessing these alternatives provides a concrete way to drastically reduce premature deaths and smoke-related diseases, which claim millions of global casualties every year.

The upcoming European Cardiovascular Health Plan needs to take a strong preventative approach to be successful, addressing the root causes of cardiovascular diseases. Cardiovascular diseases remain Europes leading killer, and we cannot rely on medical treatment alone to address this crisis.
Despite clear progress in prevention, diagnosis, and treatment over recent decades, cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains one of the leading causes of mortality and morbidity in Europe. In fact, CVD is responsible for approximately 1.8 million deaths annually across the EUaccounting for nearly 37% of all deaths, according to the European Heart Network.
The Role of Science-based Harm Reduction Policies in Cardiovascular Harm Reduction The Tobacco-Cardiovascular Crisis Cardiovascular disease is influenced by multiple lifestyle factors, including alcohol use, poor diet, smoking, and lack of exercise.
Around 80% of premature deaths from cardiovascular disease (CVD) could be avoided. The EU Action Plan on Cardiovascular Health must therefore focus on one of the most widespread yet preventable risk factors: unhealthy diets. Diet-related risks are a major driver of CVD across Europe, accounting for nearly half of all years of life lost to early death and disability.
ALBUMINURIA FOR EARLY CARDIOVASCULAR RISK DETECTION The European Kidney Health Alliance (EKHA), representing 100 million Europeans with kidney disease, calls for the systematic testing of urinary albumin (albuminuria) as a simple, non-invasive, cost-effective, and evidence-based method to detect major cardiovascular risk, particularly undiagnosed diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia and chronic kidney disease (CKD).
