spiritsEUROPE represents the interests of European spirits producers at EU level. Our membership is made of 30 national associations who represent both large and small spirits producers and 11 leading international spirits companies.

Spirits producers in Europe have long traditions of working from farm to glass, relying on high-quality agricultural raw materials and local ecosystems managed responsibly and sustainably. Our sectors geographical indications reflect centuries of knowledge in safeguarding landscapes, biodiversity, and rural economies.

Executive summary The Audiovisual Media Services Directive continues to provide a robust, balanced and futureproof regulatory framework. It delivers legal certainty, safeguards viewers and minors, and accommodates innovation in audiovisual and online advertising markets. Influencer marketing is already comprehensively addressed under existing EU legislation.

On 31 March 2022, the EU COM’s DG AGRI presented its proposal for a regulation on EU Geographical Indications (GIs), also encompassing the ca. 250 GI spirit drinks. We welcome the opportunity to provide feedback and would like to stress key messages on 4 areas: 1. spiritsEUROPE represents the spirits industry at the European level. Its membership is made of 31 national associations and a group of 10 leading spirits producing companies. We thank the European Commission for the opening of a public consultation on the inception impact assessment of the foreseen instrument to deter and counteract coercive actions by third countries.

Excise duties are indirect taxes on specific goods, such as alcoholic beverages, that must be paid at purchase/consumption by the manufacturer/retailer/importer/ principally designed to generate revenues to governments. Usually, excise duties are passed on to the consumer.
