The Region of Murcia operates the most intensive reclaimed-water reuse system in the European Union. It treats 99 % of its urban wastewater, serves 99.3 % of its population through one hundred treatment plants, and reclaims more than 96 % of the water it treats so that it can be reused: around 120 hm³ per year. Reuse rates for treated wastewater stand at 11 % in Spain and below 3 % across the Union.

Regarding Part B, Restoring and Protecting the Water Cycle, of the Call for Evidence, priority should be given to nature-based solutions that simultaneously recharge groundwater, reduce the impacts of floods and droughts, and enhance both aquatic and terrestrial biodiversity.
Water resilience requires an integrated systems approach that connects circular resource recovery, nature-based solutions, risk-informed economic models, and adaptive governance. The Water Resilience R&I Strategy should act as a catalyst for systemic transformation by aligning these dimensions and closing the gap between innovation and large-scale deployment.

Future ocean and water research should give greater attention to soil erosion and clay-sized mineral particle transport as an integrated source-to-sea challenge.
