What they argued
The Horizon Europe eDNAqua-Plan project (101112800, 09/202308/2026) welcomes the opportunity to contribute to the European Ocean Research and Innovation Strategy. eDNAqua-Plan has developed a Technical Blueprint and Roadmap to support the wider use of environmental DNA (eDNA) methods for aquatic biodiversity monitoring by addressing fragmentation in data, tools, and frameworks.
eDNAqua-Plan welcomes the revision of the MSFD as an opportunity to integrate the more systematic use of new biodiversity data collection and monitoring techniques. DNA-based methods are very suitable to address the primary criteria of descriptors 1, 2, 4 and 6. Target groups within the directive are fish, mammals and turtles and primary criteria linked to their distribution range can be addressed with eDNA methods.
