From our perspective at PYDRO, the starting point is clear: real-time monitoring needs to become a core part of Europes water digitalisation strategy. Smart meters are essential for understanding consumption, but they alone will not solve water losses.
From Monitoring Water to Predicting Water Resilience The EU Action Plan should expand digitalisation beyond smart metering, leak detection and operational monitoring. Europe increasingly faces compound water risks including declining river flows, soil moisture deficits, flood events, groundwater stress and climate-driven hydrological instability.
There are right now fantastic digital tool supporting farmers for improved irrigation. They are private software and public tools (SATIVUM , SIAR) and also sector backed tools such ours C3-SIGCEX. Despite this, even the free access tools lack of uptake due to barriers and digital divide. It compromises them since are also based on farm information retrofeeding.
In a context marked by climate change, pressure on natural resources and growing water demand, water management has become a priority challenge. In this scenario, the deployment of a smart and digital system that can improve real-time forecasts and reduce costs is not only desirable, but also essential.
