We welcome the opportunity to comment on the future of sustainable fisheries in the European Union. From the perspective of animal welfare and environmental protection, we believe that the EUs fisheries policy must prioritize the long-term health and resilience of our marine ecosystems.
Non-penetrative captive bolt method may be considered an effective method of stunning for piglets weighing less than 5 kg, but should not be used as a method of slaughter (dt.: Tötung). After stunning, death must be induced by exsanguination. The device must be used correctly, its size must be adjusted to the animal, and animal welfare requirements must be met.
Regulation (EU)2019/6 provides (recital (68)): Good manufacturing practice should take into account EU and international animal welfare standards when active substances are produced from animals. Recital (2) of the Regulation: good manufacturing practice in the Union should continue to be brought into line with the relevant int. standards.

The German Animal Welfare Association (Deutsche Tierschutzbund) is critical of the planned extension of remote testing as part of official live animal and meat inspections. The proposed changes weaken the immediate veterinary on-the-spot check and risk reducing the reliability of detection and assessment of animal welfare and health findings.

The German Animal Welfare Association (Deutsche Tierschutzbund) is critical of the planned increase in the threshold at which low-capacity farms are considered to be low-capacity farms. In principle, this threshold should be expressed as a relatively low, fixed number and not as a percentage.
