Specifically, we would like to draw the attention of the Commission to Figure 3. of the document, where the current biomass estimates for stocks of EU interests are presented as a ratio of current Biomass levels compared to 2003 biomass levels.

1. EU fisheries management should, for stocks with populations above or around MSYBtrigger, normally aim to set fishing opportunities at levels corresponding to half the estimated Fmsy instead of maximizing extraction.

The National Sociation of Producer Organisations (ANOP) drew attention to the successive crises that had profoundly affected fishing undertakings, seriously jeopardising their activities, both economically and in biological terms (impact of climate change and anthropogenic pressures on species).

The Regional Government of the Azores congratulates the European Union on the results achieved in reducing the number of overfished stocks. We also recognise that efforts to ensure that all units are exploited at sustainable levels should be strengthened as other challenges are facing the fishing industry in Europe and require swift, effective and informed action to ensure their resilience.

A general summary had already been prepared at the 2020 Conference of Ministers responsible for fisheries in the Baltic Sea riparian States, which set out the necessary measures to implement the Common Fisheries Policy. The same actions are presented as important objectives for the re-launch of this conference in Lithuania this year in September.

This is a joint response from Pro Wildlife and Sharkproject. We congratulate the EU and its Member States on the progress made so far in reducing overfishing. However, we also believe that much more needs to be done and therefore welcome the opportunity to make a submission to this consultation.
The MEDAC acknowledges the fact that the fisheries sector needs to be steered towards the criteria which would ensure achievement of full sustainability, without delay. An ecosystem-based approach shall allow managers to take into account multiple factors, including those independent from fisheries, and provide tools to mitigate the impact that management measures adopted for target species have on other stocks…
