European consumer organisations, ANEC and BEUC, welcome that the European Commission is revising Ecodesign Regulation 617/2013 - computers and computer servers. ANEC and BEUC support option 3 (i.e. combined revision of the Ecodesign and a new Energy Labelling Regulations) as requirements under both Ecodesign and the Energy label can potentially further improve the energy and resource consumption of these appliances…

We are enthusiastic that the improvements of the current legislation and the set initiatives would stimulate economic developments and innovation, as well as strengthen the sustainable society.

I have spent a fair amount of my working career at EDS / HP, specifying, configuring and installing server (X86 and Sparc based). In defining a system of data accurate data collection several factors come into play: 1) Power feeds into a server room - by this the raw energy used to power the servers, UPS, lighting, air cooling systems within a server room, all affect the amount of energy consumed within the server…

The inception impact assessment document provides a very good introduction to the topic, and we are very supportive of most of the statements made. The best policy option for consumers and the environment is indeed option 3. We would like to insist on three key points: 1/ Ecodesign requirements should be pursued, but thoroughly revised and reinforced to better reflect current technologies and practices.
