The European Commission's proposal for a new PPWR contains good approaches, but it is not yet ambitious enough and leaves out several important points. WECF calls on EU authorities to tighten up rules on harmful chemicals in packaging.

Women Engage for a Common Future (WECF) welcomes the opportunity to contribute to the evaluation of the Biocidal Products Regulation (BPR). Biocidal products are designed to control harmful organisms and therefore inherently pose risks to human health and the environment.

As WECF, we are concerned about the human rights and environmental impacts of various aspects of this plan. If we want to successfully preserve forests and global biodiversity, we need to tackle existing inequalities. Women, in all their diversity, play an essential role in protecting biodiversity. Unfortunately, gender equality is insufficiently integrated in the proposed forest monitoring plans.

Women Engage for a Common Future (WECF) welcomes the proposal of the Commission on better access to chemicals data for safety assessments. This proposal will help have better chemical evaluation and speed up the evaluation process. Openess of data will reveal data gaps on chemicals (notably gender specific data) and show that current evaluation process does not take sufficiently these aspects under account.

As an NGO network focussing on a toxic free environment and the impacts of toxins, including mercury, on health, especially women’s and children health, WECF, Women Engage for a Common Future, is calling for phasing out dental amalgam by 2025. This is technically and economically feasible, and therefore should be implemented without delay.

In order to bring the EU law into compliance with its international obligations under the Aarhus Convention an amendment of the Aarhus Regulation is necessary. Members of the public have no standing under Art. 263 TFEU to challenge acts and omissions of EU institutions that are not addressed directly to them. Therefore, it is the Aarhus Regulation that remains for the public, but currently it is unduly restrictive.
