Oceana appreciates the opportunity to contribute to the European Commission's call for evidence on a legislative proposal on CO2 transportation infrastructure and markets. Oceana is significantly concerned that the EU is pushing strongly for carbon capture and storage (CCS) as part of its plan for achieving net zero emissions by 2050. CCS is extremely expensive, inefficient, and unproven at scale.

The Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) remains the cornerstone of EU marine environmental policy. It provides a comprehensive framework for protecting Europes seas through an ecosystem-based approach to managing human activities and requires Member States to develop and implement marine strategies to achieve Good Environmental Status (GES).

Oceana welcomes amendments to the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF) Regulation to ensure full implementation into EU law of the WTO Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies. For Oceana, it is crucial to require sustainability criteria for the Autonomous Tariff Quota scheme to align tariff-free access with the environmental and social sustainability goals of the Common Fisheries Policy, in particular its goal (and that of the Common Market Organisation Regulation) to supply the EU market with sustainable seafood.
