European company law resembles the United States. Several states offer an array of corporate forms for both private and public firms, from for-profit companies to not-for-profit companies, cooperatives, associations and foundations.

The University of Helsinki welcomes the European Commissions focus on strengthening basic skills and addressing performance gaps across European education systems. Ensuring that all learners develop strong foundational skills is essential for educational equity, lifelong learning and participation in society. Strengthening basic skills should be firmly grounded in research on effective teaching and learning.

The EU Teachers Agenda should address teacher shortages not only through recruitment, but also by strengthening the attractiveness, quality and sustainability of the teaching profession. An ageing workforce, demanding working conditions, increasing workload and difficulties in attracting and retaining teachers all contribute to current and future shortages.

Relevant LUMA evidence Although LUMA is primarily a STEM and science education network rather than a digital infrastructure provider, several aspects are relevant: Digital and technology education. LUMA's mission explicitly includes mathematics, science, IT and technology education, supporting the development of digital competences among learners.

Relevant LUMA evidence National STEM competence development. LUMA Centre Finland's core mission is to inspire and motivate children and young people to engage with mathematics, science, technology and STEM subjects through research-based educational activities, study visits, clubs, camps and learning resources. This directly addresses science, mathematics and digital competences.

Relevant LUMA evidence Continuous professional development (CPD). LUMA provides continuing professional development and courses for teachers and educational staff across educational levels, supporting career development and professional competence.

From the university perspective, the KICs have been successful in pushing forward innovation and building collaboration with industry and SMEs. The integration of education within their activities is unique. In our view, the main challenges are short-termism and a lack of transparency. We also see a risk that funding could increasingly be allocated based on widening objectives rather than excellence and best ideas.
