The reduction in fishing activity for the western Mediterranean (17.5 %) has a strong impact on the economic viability of the sector’s businesses and on employment in the sector. Continuing to reduce fishing activity and further limiting this activity undermines the survival of many farms. What is proposed to protect and safeguard companies and employed seafarers?

Thank you firstly... its absolutely imperative the maximum amount of fish that fishers can take out of the sea without compromising the regeneration and future productivity of the stock is under inspection and acknowledged as needing be implemented especially with a governing body as yourselves setting out these initiatives which can form part of the sustainable approach going forward across the EU ..

The European Commission - DG MARE (the Commission) is seeking feedback on the implementation of the common fisheries policy “towards more sustainable fishing in the EU,” including progress in: -achieving sustainable fisheries -assessing the state of fish stocks -balancing fleet capacity and fishing opportunities. It also launches a public consultation on fixing fishing opportunities for 2022.

The Platform of Portuguese NGOs on Fisheries (PONG-Pesca) welcomes the Commission’s report on the state of play and orientations for fishing opportunities in 2022 and deplores the confirmation that overfishing has increased in EU waters. Given the urgency of the situation remedial measures to restore certain fish stocks will not suffice in themselves so long as quotas are set unsustainably.

ANP|WWF welcomes the EC’s report yet deplores the confirmation that overfishing has increased in EU waters. If “fisheries in the EU grow in sustainability”, they aren’t all doing so at a pace reflecting the urgency of the situation, or at all, and remedial measures to restore certain fish stocks will not suffice in themselves so long as quotas are set unsustainably.

The 17.5 % reduction for the western Mediterranean was very substantial and not dampening. A further limitation would cause other serious inconvenience which is difficult to quantify, but certainly has a significant negative impact on fishing companies and their embarked. They will bear the burden of losses, in terms of income, employment, presence in the territory, offer to the consumer, etc.

As the main EU fishing region, Galicia would like to draw attention to the following points of the Communication on the state of play of the CFP and the guidelines for 2022: 1.We emphasise the recognition of the good status of fisheries in the North-East Atlantic, which almost reaches Maximum Sustainable Yield in 2021.

Please find attached a reply from the Baltic Sea Advisory Council (BSAC). The feedback letter is signed by the BSAC Executive Committee Chair, on behalf of the BSAC. The BSAC comprises organisations which represent the fisheries as well as other interest groups affected by the CFP.

The EU fisheries policy for the Mediterranean must be comprehensively revised and a greater overall vision is needed. Strict studies have shared how the situation of the stocks in the Mediterranean is complete and how the indicators are strongest influenced by hidden variables linked to the overall conditions of the fishing effort of all states, specifically non-EU states.

The Communication from the Commission to the Parliament and the Council sets out the main orientations for the preparation of the proposals on fishing opportunities for 2022. While the CFP is based on three pillars: Environmental, economic and social, it seems that the Commission forgets everyone and focuses only on stocks and the need to reduce fishing mortality.

The Spanish fisheries sector calls for the political responsibility of the Spanish fisheries sector to prevent the EU from making a new mistake in the implementation of the fisheries policy in the Mediterranean. There is an urgent need for real and positive messages from the European institutions to be sent to fishermen in order to regain trust in Europe.

The first objective of the Common Fisheries Policy is to achieve environmental, but also economic and social sustainability. With the current wording of the Western Mediterranean MAP and its implementation in Spain, there is a serious risk that MSY will not be reached by the given date, but if it destroys economically and socially not only trawling, if not much of our catching sector.

The West Med plan entered into force in 2019-2020, in a context of a health crisis which has weakened the sector. The measures applied in France are important and impacting on our fleet of about sixty trawlers. For example, 2 areas representing 6.000 km² or 50 % of the Gulf of Lion area are closed between 6 and 8 months a year to protect juveniles and broodstock.

The sea has always been a notable human food reserve. Over the last few decades, fishing has undergone major changes dictated by human-oriented economic policies. The need to protect certain marine species is important for the marine ecosystem. Fishing must be carried out by monitoring the fish currently possible and the European Union must take swift action.
