The Östergötland Region warmly welcomes the European Commission’s ambition to reduce the environmental impact of the transport sector by increasing the use of fossil-free fuels and technologies that allow emission-free operation. Strong action and a variety of solutions will be needed to reach ambitious commitments to reduce the climate impact and increase the share of renewable energy use.

Please find Region Östergötland's position paper regarding bioenergy as a source of energy and fuel attached. Region Östergötland, which relies extensively on biofuels in public transport, have been able to significantly cut its carbon dioxide emissions from the sector, taking into account a life cycle perspective.

Industry is committed to ambitious but technically and economically realistic targets. The overall trajectory proposed by the European Commission for all vehicle categories (-45 % from 1 January 2030, -65 % from 1 January 2035 and -90 % from 1 January 2040) is very ambitious.
