Diabetes is an incurable and complex disease, which currently affects more than 33 million people across the European Union.

As recognised in the Safe Hearts Plan, cardiovascular diseases are closely linked with other major non-communicable diseases (NCDs), notably diabetes, obesity and chronic kidney disease.

Safe hearts require safe lungs European Respiratory Society and European Lung Foundation response to the European Commissions proposal for Council Recommendations on health checks for cardiovascular diseases. The cardiovascular system isintrinsically dependent on the respiratory system, and respiratory impairment is an important indicator of both cardiac and respiratory health.
