The Belgian Disability Forum (BDF) is the largest forum for associations representing persons with disabilities in Belgium. The BDF welcomes the fact that its proposal for a European Mobility Card from 2008 will finally become a reality with the presence of the European Disability Card (EDC) in all Member States.

CERMI welcomes the fact that the Commission is promoting this legislative initiative, which has long been called for and proposed by the European and national disability movement, in particular from Spain. The European Disability Card should enable persons with disabilities to enjoy on an equal basis the free movement of persons, one of the essential elements of the EU.

The CERMI movement welcomes this legislative initiative, which responds to a historical demand of great importance in the European disability agenda: to guarantee the enjoyment of free movement by people with disabilities on equal terms with other people. This is one of the foundations on which the European Union has been built, but which has so far been denied to people with disabilities.

The EDC is a 'descendant' of the proposal of the Belgian Disability Forum (BDF) for the development of a European disability card dating from 2009. The current Commission proposal therefore almost fully meets the requirements set at the time. Thus, the BDF and all the disability advisory councils in Belgium are very pleased to welcome the proposal!

CERMI welcomes the European Commission’s proposal to declare 2021 ‘European Year of Rail’ . Accessible transport is a vital precondition for persons with disabilities to exercise of one of the four freedoms granted by the EU Treaties - free movement of citizens within the EU. A sustainable mobility strategy must be built with an inclusive social vision.

CERMI welcomes the European Commission proposal. A sustainable mobility strategy must be constructed with an inclusive social vision. Rail can only be promoted as a sustainable, innovative and secure mode of transport for all people if it is done in an inclusive approach, taking into account the more than 100 million persons with disabilities potentially using rail transport in the European Union.

The European Green Deal must take account of the importance of rail, including in its dimension of free movement of people. It must become a reality for every citizen, including disabled persons and persons with reduced mobility, without discrimination. Future investments under the European Green Deal need to take this into account.
