Great economic importance of rail freight transport It is the European goal of rail freight transport to increase the share of rail from today's EU average of 18% to 30% by 2030 in order to neutralize the negative environmental and social impact of the projected strong growth of land-based transport.

A review of the Weights and Dimensions Directive risks affecting the competitiveness between different modes of transport, especially in freight transport. The revision must not lead to more road freight transport, but instead be mindful of the competitiveness of rail freight transport, which is already largely electric and low in emissions.

ÖBB welcomes the upcoming revision of Directive 2007/59/EC and the development of further measures for more efficient, safe and sustainable railway operations, including those across borders. The following topics are fundamental in the revision. The use of electronic formats for the certification of train drivers (e.g. digital EU passport) should be included in the directive.
