Updating the list of invasive species threatening biodiversity and ecosystem services across the EU

Dear Committee, The Samenwerkende Aquarium en Terrarium Organisaties (SATO) commented on the EU Invasive Alien Species Regulation's public consultations in the past and is grateful to provide her feedback once again. In our previous episode we voiced strong concerns over the interpretation of scientific facts and figures on the Pterois miles, pointing out skewed interpretations and dogma across several levels.

In Sweden, the EPA has now included the American mink on the national list of invasive alien species. Control measures are already being carried out today, but in the future the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency and the county administrative boards intend to step up work — not least in the Swedish archipelago and on islands where damage is often greatest, and where the mink is less likely to recur.

ENA, the European Nurserystock Association, represents the nurseries – plant growers and traders – at the European level and welcomes the opportunity to share our views regarding the update of the list of invasive alien species. The national live plant producers' organisations from sixteen EU Member States are members of ENA.

The species you list on your proposed list are not so common in Sweden and most of them do not occur at all. On the contrary, in southern Sweden, we have serious problems with other species that are missing from your list, including Canadian gullris (Solidago canadensis), vresros (Rosa rugosa) and flower lupin (Lupinus polyphyllus).

For over 30 years we have been running the Clematis Source of Good Climbers nursery in Pruszków near Warsaw, specializing in the production of clematis and other garden climbers. Celastrus orbiculatus is one of the climbers we produce and sell. It is a valuable, undemanding climber. It is widely used in urban greenery, where it thrives even in weak, degraded soils, where other climbers cannot cope.

Terrarium Animal Enthusiasts Association of Northern Finland response to the proposal to add Lampropeltis getula to the list of Invasive alien species of EU Terrarium Animal Enthusiast Association of Northern Finland opposes the addition of Lampropeltis getula to the list of Invasive alien species of EU. Lampropeltis getula is not an Invasive alien species threat in Finland or northern Finland.

Dear Sirs, I am writing on behalf of the Verband Botanischer Gärten, a 90-member organization representing botanical Gardens in Germany and neighbouring countries. I fully endorse the efforts to combat alien invasive species in the EU and I am impressed by the scientific efforts going into this exercise.

Round-blown treeworms should not be included in the list because they are well suited to climate adaptation measures that become necessary. For the purpose of greening façades, which are placed under controlled conditions as a result of the increasing number of heat days, it seems appropriate to use it. Round-blown tree spices should also not be included in the list.

The Polish Nurserymen Association is a non-profit organization uniting producers of high quality plants – trees, shrubs, climbers and perennials. The association has over 200 members representing Polish nurseries. The value of nursery stock produced in Poland annually exceeds PLN 1 billion. In terms of nursery production surface Poland ranks 4th place in Europe.

The list of invasive alien species at stake for the European Union and its updating is an asset for better collective consideration of the issue of biological invasions. Hello It is highly desirable for the maintenance of biodiversity to create a list of invasive species and the addition of 5 new plant species to the existing list shows the effort in this fight. I would draw particular attention to the inclusion of the Raison d’Americas (Phytolhakana) on that list, as it is of real concern in certain forests.

I wish to advocate for the marine invertebrates and marine algae to be added to the list i.e. Boccardia proboscidea, Schizoporella japonica; Perna viridis and Rugulopteryx okamurae. Currently there are no fully marine species listed.

Dear Sir/madam, thank you for the opportunity to give feedback on the listing. we like to give feedback on the listing of Pistia stratiotes. Based the following points we don’t think it right to list the Pistia on the list. - The substantiation of listing a plant is not been done in the correct way as required. and how it is described in the European law for listing a plant.

Fighting free species that damage biodiversity in Europe is a good thing, but imposing very (if not too strict) criteria on zoos that hold them safely is aberrant. I hope that the European authorities will take this into account in future texts. Sincerely
