The United Nations Environment Programme has been working closely with the European Environment Agency (EEA) on the interface to environmental information, services and assessments for decades. Below is a summary of EEAs valuable contributions to global environmental assessments and UNEP-led processes in the period 2022-2026. More details are available in the attached document.

From the perspective of TG Soil, Eionet is a fantastic network, involving central representatives from 38 countries, led by an energetic coordinator. The main purpose is data registration of the status of soil, but the network touches on broader topics that relate to soil quality and soil health. It proved to be very valuable to share insights from different countries and cultures.

We welcome the opportunity to contribute to this evaluation. The EEA and Eionet provide significant added value to Member States through high-quality environmental information, harmonised methodologies, expert cooperation and knowledge sharing. EEA reports, indicators and data platforms support evidence-based policymaking and help national authorities implement EU environmental and climate legislation.

I strongly welcome this evaluation. I am a long-standing national data provider/reporter, mainly in climate change mitigation but also supporting areas such as air pollution. I selected a random country because I do not want to be identifiable. EEA and Eionet add value through quality-checked, comparable European data.

The work of the European Environment Agency and EIONET is crucial for environmental data, knowledge and expertise and provides an important evidence base for policymaking, implementation and monitoring at European level. For UNECE, EEA is a key partner, recognized for the quality and reliability of its work on environmental data, information and assessment and for advancing innovative approaches.

The EEA is, together with the Eionet network, a key institution and network tool to provide the knowledge and data needed to prepare, develop, implement and monitor environmental policies across Europe. It helps ensure the scientific basis for good policymaking at EU and national levels. EEAs work and expertise are highly respected and followed by many experts and authorities in the environmental field.

We fully support the comments submitted by Poland regarding the methodology used for the presentation of bathing water quality data in the EEA report European bathing water quality in 2025, in particular Figure 1, Proportion of bathing waters of excellent quality in European countries. We face a similar issue in our country.

In the context of the evaluation of the European Environment Agency (EEA) and Eionet, we emphasize the crucial importance of evolving environmental data collection methods to effectively support the EU's new policies (Green Deal, ESPR, Digital Product Passport). Until now, the EEA has excelled in aggregating macro-environmental data.

The Malta Sociological Association (MSA) notes the evaluation of the European Environment Agency (EEA) and the European Environment Information and Observation Network (Eionet) for 20222026 and recognises their important contribution to evidence-informed environmental policymaking. The MSA recommends strengthening the social dimension of environmental information and monitoring.

The EEA/Eionet plays an important role in collecting, harmonising, analysing and disseminating environmental information, thereby supporting evidence based environmental policymaking and the implementation and assessment of EU legislation. From a national authority perspective, it is important that these data flows continue to provide reliable, comparable and relevant information while remaining efficient.
