WeProtect Global Alliance (‘the Alliance’) is a non-profit that brings together people and organisations with the knowledge, experience and influence to transform the global response to child sexual exploitation and abuse online.

UNICEF is mandated by the United Nations General Assembly to advocate for the protection of children’s rights, to help meet their basic needs and to expand their opportunities to reach their full potential. UNICEF welcomes the European Union’s efforts to enhance children’s protection in relation to the digital environment.

WeProtect Global Alliance (the Alliance) strongly supports the European Commissions initiative to extend the temporary exemption from certain provisions of the ePrivacy Directive to maintain effective measures to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse online.

UNICEF supports the proposal to amend Regulation 2021/1232/EU (the Interim regulation) to provide a limited time extension while the inter-institutional negotiations of the longer-term regulation are ongoing. This is crucial to ensure no gap in the protection of children, especially as we see recent evolutions in the digital environment creating even more ways to harm children.
