Looking at the historical development of the GI system for food, wines and spirits it was (and is) still a challenge to establish and secure this special type of intellectual property. There are still lots of problems (international agreements, practical implementation, fraud etc.) to solve. The non-food and craft sector is very diverse between the various crafts and different from food.

In recent years, the possibility of creating a harmonised system for the recognition and protection of non-agricultural geographical indications (GIs) has been extensively discussed in the EU. More recently, on 10 November 2020, the Council of the EU adopted a set of conclusions on the future of intellectual property policy, which includes the recognition of the need to strengthen GI protection systems.
