AREPO is driven by a vision of Geographical Indications (GIs) as tools for rural development and territorial planning. We have a long experience in the protection and valorisation of agricultural and agri-food GIs. Likewise, we believe that GIs for non-agricultural products could contribute to the growth and development of local territories.

In recent years, the possibility of creating a harmonised system for the recognition and protection of non-agricultural geographical indications (GIs) has been extensively discussed in the EU. More recently, on 10 November 2020, the Council of the EU adopted a set of conclusions on the future of intellectual property policy, which includes the recognition of the need to strengthen GI protection systems.
