Ireland recognises that working onboard a fishing vessel is a physically demanding and dangerous occupation and so supports the proposed evaluation of the Fishing Vessel Safety Directive in order to get an accurate picture of the Directive’s implementation and enforcement.

NL is in favour of extending the scope to fishing vessels of less than 24 metres in length, but with a minimum of 12 metres. NL also suggests developing a lighter regime for this group, i.e. fishing vessels between 12 and 24 metres, and starting with a recommendation rather than an obligation.
