In the Flemish Region, De Vlaamse Waterweg nv as a waterway manager, is activily engaging in developing digital tools for inland waterway transport. This through the development of River Information Services (RIS) and especially the VisuRIS tool (Visualisation of RIS).

The inland shipping sector operates under difficult economic conditions. Competition is fierce and there is a structural over-capacity in the sector. The rules in relation to qualification of crew, registration of navigation times and labour contracts and -conditions can rather easily be by-passed and that is happening frequently.
