On the road to a climate-friendly economy, the European Union relies on overarching targets, EU-wide measures and binding national climate targets. In December 2019, EU leaders pledged to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. This means that all greenhouse gas emissions in the European Union should be reduced by 2050. The remaining residual emissions must be offset by appropriate processes across all sectors.
