In summary, Generation Climate Europe (GCE) welcomes the European Commissions initiative on a Circular Economy Act, a very important step forward to enhance the circular economy in the EU. However, we want to highlight that the necessity of rethinking the current economic system must be integrated in the CE Act.

Generation Climate Europe (GCE) expresses its concerns regarding the European Commissions Proposal for a Regulation establishing a framework for ensuring a secure and sustainable supply of critical raw materials published on the 16th of March 2023. In addition, we suggest potential elements for the improvement of the Regulation in the attached position paper drafted by our Digitalisation Project.
The EU needs to be clear about what needs to be done to achieve “Carbon Net Zero”. Stopping fossil fuel subsidies, carbon pricing, modernising transport networks, CAP reform, stopping carbon leakage (carbon border tax).
Generation Climate Europe welcomes the Commission’s proposal for an Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) replacing the current Ecodesign Directive. We consider that, overall, its level of comprehensiveness and ambition are the necessary ones that are needed in light of the need to build more circular and sustainable economic systems.
The new restoration law must be targeted, to avoid past failures in reaching targets, and include concrete actions leading to large-scale restoration across the EU. It is important that it builds on existing definitions to ensure rapid adoption and implementation as well as coherence. The new law should not undermine or duplicate existing EU Directives including restoration requirements but complement them.
