Carbon neutrality by 2050 The EU commitment to carbon neutrality by 2050 is an important and commendable step. Carbon neutrality or net-zero is not however the same as full decarbonisation. The promotion of natural carbon sinks through protection of biodiversity and afforestation will play an important role in reaching carbon neutrality.
We welcome the upcoming revision of the TEN-E Regulation, as its current iteration is not compatible with the EU’s 2050 climate neutrality goals and has resulted in EU support for unnecessary fossil fuel infrastructure. The inclusion of fossil gas in the TEN-E Regulation is a persistent barrier to achieving the climate targets, which will lock in fossil fuel use and delay the renewable transition.
