As the only supranational organisation representing more than 1 million deaf people before the European Union through a network of National Associations of the Deaf (NADs) from 31 countries (27 Member States, Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and the United Kingdom), the European Union of the Deaf (EUD) issued a report on the implementation of the AVMSD.
The European Union of the Deaf (EUD) welcomes the Commissions proposal for a directive establishing an EU Disability Card (EDC). EUD has been a longstanding supporter of the EDC initiative and sees it as a significant step towards fulfilling the rights of deaf people to the freedom of movement in the EU.
EUD welcomes the European Commissions initiative to establish the European Disability Card. Besides the benefits that the Card can grant to persons with disabilities in the sectors of culture, sports and leisure, the Card must facilitate the right to freedom of movement for persons with disabilities in the EU, which is still denied to many deaf persons in the EU.
