currENT welcomes the Critical Raw Materials Act proposed by the European Commission on 16 March 2023. It is vital that the EU identifies and secures delivery of all the raw materials that will be necessary for the transition to a fully decarbonised economy.

currENT is an industry association that represents the voice of Europe’s innovative grid technology companies. currENT welcomes the Commission´s initiative to review the existing Network and Information Security (NIS) Directive. Safe and reliable electric service has long been understood to be a fundamental underpinning of modern society.

Electricity grids are a central component of EU competitiveness. They are crucial to enable the mass uptake of renewables, support the electrification of end uses, and meet the 90% reduction of greenhouse gases by 2040.

It is widely agreed that without modern, resilient, and optimised grids, the EU will miss its 2040 and 2050 climate and energy targets. This is why the revision of Governance Regulation must fully integrate the wide-scale deployment of innovative grid technologies. This is also essential to strengthening Europes competitiveness in a rapidly electrifying global economy.

The current EU energy security framework remains heavily reliant on fossil fuels. As Europe moves toward full decarbonisation based on electrification and renewables, major investments in electricity grids will be essential. The framework must address long-term challenges such as climate change, rising energy use, technological change, hyperconnectivity, and resource scarcity.
