A general increase in the maximum permissible weight for HGV combinations by 10 % to 44 tonnes would allow for an increase in payload of the order of 15 %. However, taking into account the applicable maximum axle loads, it is likely that this is often only about 10 %. The so-called AASHO road test established the link between a vehicle’s axle load and the resulting road design damage.
