The scientific community genomics and genetic engineering (WGG) generally welcomes the Commission’s proposal to regulate plants resulting from the new genomic techniques (NGTs). This new regulation is long overdue and will bring some of the rules on genetically modified organisms (GMOs) to the current state of science and technology.

The entry into force of Regulation (EU) 2026/1388 with the distinction between the two categories of genome-edited plants is warmly welcomed. This Regulation will facilitate the translation of research results into marketable genome-edited plants for SMEs and scientists from governmental and university research institutions. For users and consumers, this can bring safe and improved plants to the market, e.g.
