Syctom is a French local public authority and a public service. It is the leading European public operator in municipal waste management. With its 6 sorting centres and 3 waste-to-energy units, Syctom processes 2.3 million tonnes of municipal waste (namely 10% of French municipal waste) from six million inhabitants of the Île-de-France region, including Paris.
Syctom, the public waste management service for 85 municipalities in Ile de France, including Paris (6 million inhabitants), fully supports the proposed measures. The costs of processing non-recyclable waste cannot increase indefinitely without affecting the finances of the communities that are responsible for it, and thus ultimately to the public.

Syctom is the Metropolitan agency for municipal waste in the Paris region and Europe's largest public operator of municipal waste. As a public service, Syctom strongly supports the European Green Deal and the New Circular Economy Action Plan (NCEAP), especially the objective to significantly reduce total waste generation and halve the amount of residual (non-recycled) municipal waste by 2030.
French local authorities are preparing for the widespread sorting of food waste at source on 1 January 2024. Separate treatment of this waste is one of the few ways of reducing within a reasonable time and very significantly the still very large amounts of residual waste which, in the absence of prior sorting by the inhabitants, is incinerated or, in the worst case, buried.

As of 1 January 2024, it will be mandatory in the European Union to provide citizens with separate treatment methods for bio-waste, the potential for material and energy recovery of which is important, from a circular economy perspective, as a necessary condition for sustainable development. On the other hand, residents will be asked to carry out this new sorting without being obliged to do so in many Member States.
