Public procurement could serve as an effective tool for the European Union to promote the integration of animal welfare into food production. The current Directive does not impose any obligation to take into account sustainability or quality in public procurement; the choice on the basis of price alone is still allowed.

Vision 2040 is an important and long-term approach to the development of commercial fishing and aquaculture. To be truly sustainable, this plan must include animal welfare in comprehensive way. First and foremost, this means a revision of the Unions animal-welfare legislation in a way which finally takes a full account of the aquatic animals and their welfare needs.
SEY Finnish animal welfare supports the Commission’s idea of banning fur farming with a transitional period as short as possible, not exceeding a few years. We support the Commission’s idea of banning fur farming in the EU for mink, foxes, raccoon dogs and chinchillos. At the same time, it is necessary to prohibit the placing on the EU market of fur and fur products from these animals.

The Commission’s presentation is largely good. However, the following points should be added: —There should be a clearer response to sick breeding through regulations and limits – The sale of dogs and cats in animal shops should be prohibited – stray dogs and cats must also be identified and registered.
