With the revision of the Waste Framework Directive, the European Commission aims to protect public health and the environment through the proper management of waste. This is done by applying the EU’s waste hierarchy, which promotes 1. waste prevention (reduce) over 2. preparing for reuse; over 3. recycling; over 4. other waste recovery options; over 5. disposal of waste. Reusable Packaging Europe (RPE) fully supports the European Commission in its ambition to widen the scope of the Eco-design Directive and promote sustainable packaging (design), and calls on the Commission to respect the respect the waste hierarchy in doing so, thus promoting reusable (transport) packaging.
