Plantum welcomes the proposal published by the Commission outlining an approach to regulate certain NGT-products that are conventional-like differently from the current GMO legislation. The European Union should seize this opportunity to regulate NGT proportionately, to fully unlock the potential these technologies have to contribute to solutions for various global challenges.

The value of the European rules for New Genomic Techniques (NGT) is ultimately determined by the feasibility of the verification procedure. For breeders and public researchers, it should be clear in advance what information is needed, how changes are counted and when a plant can be definitively treated as category 1 (NGT-1).

Plantum represents over 300 companies involved in seeds and young plants, boasting an export volume of 4 billion euros in 2022.
