This contribution aims at providing feedback on behalf of I.BLU (IREN Group) to the Commission Proposal for a Directive of the European Parliament and of the Council amending directive 2008/98/EC on waste. The revision of this file is welcome and necessary, especially with regard to the aim of reducing the environmental and climate impacts associated with the textile waste and the generation of food waste.
One of the main objectives of the WFD revision initiative is to reduce the quantities of mixed waste destined to disposal and incineration and to increase recycling rates. To do this, the separate waste collection needs to improve in quality and quantity, to increase the percentage of waste sent to recycle. However, this is not enough: the recyclability rate of the collected plastics also must improve.
The European heavy industry is currently facing an unprecedented crisis, mainly due to environmental challenges as well as unsustainable energy and raw material costs, which also heavily affects all of the downstream industrial sectors.
The main objective of the harmonization of end-of-waste criteria at EU level is to facilitate the circulation of recyclates and boost the market of secondary raw materials.
