CCU (Carbon Capture and Utilisation) is crucial for growing fruit, vegetables, flowers and plants in Europe as it provides a sustainable way of supplying CO to greenhouses, which is essential for plant growth. Instead of obtaining CO from fossil energy, CCU CO can be captured from industrial processes and reused in the greenhouse.

Fruit, vegetables, flowers, and plants grown with net-zero emissions nor residues on products. This is our ambition for 2030. Our growers are moving from conventional synthetic to greener plant protection like natural enemies, Biocontrol, precision techniques, and low-risk substances. The past 15 years, the footprint of controlled environment agriculture (CEA) has accordingly dropped by 90 per cent.

European controlled environment agriculture (CEA) is among the most advanced and resource-efficient horticultural production systems in the world. High-tech CEA allows growers to grow fruits, vegetables, flowers, and plants with efficient use of water, nutrients, and energy, while minimising emissions to the environment.
Plant variety rights may be applied for by breeders and discoverers of plant varieties. This right of ownership gives the breeder the exclusive right to trade and reproduce that plant for 25 to 30 years. All plant species are included.

Glasshouse horticulture The Netherlands welcomes the Commission’s proposal to enable financial compensation of ETS 2 costs for end users. This is important to avoid that ETS-2 leads to unintended costs for entrepreneurs that are in principle outside ETS-2. The proposed framework provides an important basis for Member States to address those financial consequences of ETS-2 in a proportionate manner.
