Prioritisation: We agree that one of the central problems to address in this reform is the need for greater and rapid penetration for renewable heating and cooling technologies to address climate pollution from heat consumption. 2.

The European Geothermal Energy Council (EGEC) welcomes the European Commissions initiative to review the Climate and Environmental Delegated Acts of the EU Taxonomy legislation. We strongly support the objectives of simplification, reduction of administrative burden, and alignment of Taxonomy with the EUs industrial and climate ambitions.

EGEC welcomes the opportunity to provide feedback to the Inception Impact Assessment of upcoming revisions to the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive. 1. Significance: It is impossible to meet the EU’s 2030 and 2050 climate neutrality targets without ensuring all heating and cooling equipment and appliances are renewable by 2025.

EGEC views on the consultation on the proposed European Climate Law EGEC, the voice of the European geothermal industry, welcomes the opportunity to respond to the consultation on the Climate Law. The climate crisis is the greatest threat to peace and mutual prosperity and must be addressed urgently. How this target is achieved is important.

There is a choice between a ‘Low-risk & low-cost’ pathway based on renewable energy solutions, energy savings and innovative technologies or a ‘High-cost & high-risk’ pathway, which is based on accounting tricks, continued subsides to fossil fuel incumbents and ineffective targets.

EGEC welcomes the opportunity to contribute to the consultation process on the revision of the Energy Efficiency Directive. For the geothermal sector, the EU targets on climate, renewable energy and energy efficiency need to be revised upwards to be aligned with the 2050 decarbonisation objectives.

EGEC welcomes the European Commission’s intention to revise the Energy Taxation Directive (ETD) to remove harmful fossil fuel subsidies and align energy taxation to the net-zero climate target by 2050. To be effective, the revision will include: 1. Removing direct and indirect fossil fuel subsidies for heat: We endorse the emphasis placed on “effective carbon pricing and the removal of fossil fuel subsidies”.

We welcome the European Commissions initiative to establish a strengthened renewable energy framework for the post-2030 period. Binding RED targets and their implementing frameworks have been vital in protecting Europe from energy price and supply crises to date.

EGEC views on Modernising the EU’s Batteries legislation EGEC, the voice of the European geothermal industry, is a not-for-profit association representing the entire value-chain of the industry across 28 countries.

We welcome the opportunity to contribute to the process of modernising the EU’s batteries legislation, to drive the development of a sustainable batteries value chain. For EGEC, a European sustainable batteries value chain must be first and foremost compliant with the imperatives of decarbonisation and those of minimising the environmental impacts. For this reason, EGEC acknowledges the emphasis put on recycling.

Geothermal energy provides renewable electricity, heating and cooling, as well as sustainable mineral extraction and the most efficient and least land-intensive energy storage. It is therefore at the heart of the energy transition and system integration.

Geothermal energy provides renewable heating, cooling and baseload electricity. It has suffered from unfair competition with incumbent fossil gas, oil and coal because they have benefited from decades of public subsidies for infrastructure, appliances and consumption as well as the lack of a carbon price reflecting the true cost of their externalities.

The European Geothermal Energy Council (EGEC) welcomes the European Commissions initiative to strengthen the EU energy and climate framework for the post-2030 period. Achieving a 90% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2040 will require not only the rapid expansion of variable renewable energy sources, but also the deployment of reliable, dispatchable and locally available solutions such as geothermal energy.

The European Geothermal Energy Council (EGEC) welcomes the Commission's proposal for a Regulation to establish the Just Transition Fund (JTF) - the first legislative act of the European Green Deal. We strongly believe that the JTF is crucial to support fossil fuel regions to take the necessary steps to transition towards the zero-carbon economy.

The European Geothermal Energy Council (EGEC) welcomes the European Commissions initiative to review the energy labelling and Ecodesign requirements for space and combination heaters. These revisions are timely and necessary to reflect technological progress, market developments, rescaling obligations under the Energy Labelling Framework Regulation, and the objectives of the European Green Deal.

We support the European Commissions efforts to establish minimum environmental sustainability requirements for public procurement procedures involving net-zero technologies. While we welcome the Commissions initiative, we believe that excluding geothermal energy at this stage contradicts the NZIAs technology-neutral approach.

We welcome the support provided for geothermal in these funds but hope that minor interventions will be able to facilitate more cost-effective attainment of the EUs energy, climate, food security, greater support for geothermal heating, cooling, electricity, storage sustainable lithium extraction to protect Europe energy system from external threats and ensure industrial competitiveness as well as sustainable…
