The European Geothermal Energy Council (EGEC) welcomes the European Commissions initiative to review the Climate and Environmental Delegated Acts of the EU Taxonomy legislation. We strongly support the objectives of simplification, reduction of administrative burden, and alignment of Taxonomy with the EUs industrial and climate ambitions.

We welcome the European Commissions initiative to establish a strengthened renewable energy framework for the post-2030 period. Binding RED targets and their implementing frameworks have been vital in protecting Europe from energy price and supply crises to date.

We welcome the upcoming European Geothermal Strategy and Action Plan in the context of the Electrification Action Plan and the Heating and Cooling strategy. Geothermal energy provides renewable electricity, heating and cooling, as well as sustainable mineral extraction and the most efficient and least land-intensive energy storage. It is therefore at the heart of the energy transition and system integration.

The European Geothermal Energy Council (EGEC) welcomes the European Commissions initiative to strengthen the EU energy and climate framework for the post-2030 period. Achieving a 90% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2040 will require not only the rapid expansion of variable renewable energy sources, but also the deployment of reliable, dispatchable and locally available solutions such as geothermal energy.

EGEC, the voice of the European geothermal industry, is a not-for-profit association representing the entire value-chain of the industry across 28 countries. We welcome the opportunity to contribute to the Commissions guidelines on designating renewables acceleration areas (RAAs) and highlight the following (see attached document).

The European Geothermal Energy Council (EGEC) welcomes the European Commissions initiative to review the energy labelling and Ecodesign requirements for space and combination heaters. These revisions are timely and necessary to reflect technological progress, market developments, rescaling obligations under the Energy Labelling Framework Regulation, and the objectives of the European Green Deal.

We support the European Commissions efforts to establish minimum environmental sustainability requirements for public procurement procedures involving net-zero technologies. While we welcome the Commissions initiative, we believe that excluding geothermal energy at this stage contradicts the NZIAs technology-neutral approach.
