Energy Cities

Reducing regional disparities is essential to put people in the position to exercise their right to stay in the place they call home. Such disparities are not only linked to access to quality services and opportunities: climate change and green transition related challenges also risk widening disparities if not properly addressed.

Energy Cities welcomes the initiative of the Commission and its objectives. Our main messages are the following We need direct connections between consumers and the production of cheap and clean energy : PPAS, energy sharing and individual self-consumption. Why ?

Local authorities are key players of the heating and cooling (H&C) transition. To better understand their needs, Energy Cities recently surveyed its members on their knowledge, priorities, and challenges around H&C in the EU context. The responses highlight both the ambition and the hurdles cities faceand point to a clear call for support, tools, and policy alignment.

Energy Cities believes that mapping and planning are fundamental steps towards achieving our common 2030 climate targets, but when guiding national governments in the identification of acceleration areas, there should be some key aspects to be kept in mind: Local governments involvement Municipalities should be involved in a meaningful way in the identification of such areas.

Local authorities (LAs) account for significant EU energy consumption and lead crisis responses, as seen in the 2022 energy-saving sprint by the European Covenant of Mayors. LAs increase their energy independence by cutting energy use and boosting local renewable production. Thus, local governments must be considered allies for a resilient EU energy system. The following suggestions are along these lines: 1.
