Drax Group became Europe’s largest decarbonisation project by upgrading its existing facility from using coal to sustainable woody biomass and is now also piloting Europe’s first bioenergy with carbon capture and storage project (BECCS), which, if successful, will make the renewable electricity produced by the power station carbon negative.

Bioenergy is currently one of the largest sources of renewable energy in the EU and a key driver of the Unions energy transition. Drax welcomes the European Commission initiative to set up an EU-wide and robust certification system for carbon removals. Subject to appropriate methodologies, this framework will provide greater certainty, transparency and clarity for the industry and investors.

We welcome the opportunity to contribute to this consultation on the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS), which we regard as a critical instrument for delivering the EUs climate and energy objectives including its legally binding target of climate neutrality by 2050.

Negative Emissions Through Bioenergy with CCS (BECCS) The European and indeed, the global, consensus is that achieving climate neutrality will only be possible with negative emissions, for example through the deployment of technologies such as bioenergy with CCS (BECCS).

We welcome the opportunity to contribute to the call for evidence on the Biotech Act II. The initiative has the potential to support the scale up of bio-based products, biomanufacturing and renewable carbon solutions, including those based on captured and recycled carbon.

Thank you for the opportunity to participate in this call for evidence on the renewable energy framework post 2030. Delivering the EUs objective of a 90% reduction in GHG emissions by 2040 will require a rapid and sustained scale-up of renewable energy.

Drax Group plc welcomes the European Commissions proposal for a binding EU-wide target to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions by 90% by 2040, establishing a clear and ambitious pathway toward climate neutrality by 2050. Meeting this target will require transformative policies and investment conditions that strengthen the EUs competitiveness while attracting the innovation and capital needed to scale solutions.

Drax welcomes CBAMs objective of preventing carbon leakage, whilst also retaining the integrity of the EU ETS and avoiding double charging of carbon costs on the same emissions. We further welcome the recognition of carbon credits as equivalent to emission allowances, subject to these being already accepted as a compliance option for a local ETS or carbon tax.
