Despite the adoption of successive strategies for the outermost regions (ORs), with positive impacts on their development and territorial cohesion, these regions are still lagging behind the rest of the EU in terms of socio-economic development, quality of life and access to basic needs and services.

The Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) welcomes the European Commission’s intention to adopt, in the 2th quarter of 2026, and following a new strategy for the ORs, a proposal for a regulation containing simplification measures and specific derogations for the ORs in all relevant sectoral EU legislation.
