COFALEC is the Confederation of European yeast producers. Beyond the traditional applications of yeast in fermented food and drinks (bread, wine, beer), the European Yeast producers are committed to provide a wide range of solutions to achieve a more sustainable and low-carbon food chain.

COFALEC is the voice of the European Yeast producer’s vis à vis EU institutions and the civil society. The European yeast sector is the world leader with 30% of export outside Europe. 33 factories scattered in 22 European countries are producing more than 1 Mt of yeast each year. COFALEC members work as close as possible to their clients, to secure a local sourcing.

COFALEC, the Confederation of European Yeast Producers, welcomes the opportunity to contribute to the EUs review of the Emissions Trading System (ETS) and the Market Stability Reserve (MSR). As an energy-sensitive sector with both large and small industrial facilities, we are directly impacted by the EUs carbon pricing mechanisms.

COFALEC represents the European yeast industry as the Confederation of European yeast producers. The European yeast industry stands as the global leader in production volume, accounting for one-third of the worldwide yeast output.

COFALEC, the European federation of Yeast producers, welcomes the initiative to review the EU Emissions Trading System Directive to align with the challenging -55% GHG reduction target by 2030 and to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. COFALEC agrees with the proposal to broaden the scope of ETS to involve more economic sectors as we share the opinion that the efforts should be supported among the highest numbers.

COFALEC, representing the European yeast industry, welcomes the Biotech Act II and the Commission's ambition to strengthen Europe's biotechnology and biomanufacturing capacity. This response sets out how the Act can support not only emerging biotech, but also the established fermentation industries that already underpin Europe's food, feed and bioeconomy value chains.

The sector supports the EUs climate objectives and recognises the key role of renewable energy in achieving climate neutrality, energy security and competitiveness.
