The European Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) is fundamentally pursuing the right goal: climate protection by preventing carbon leakage. In its current form, however, the CBAM fails to achieve this goal, and at the same time jeopardizes the international competitiveness of European industry. Discussions about extending CBAM to downstream steel and aluminum products miss the point.
CEMEP supports European measures aimed at increasing demand for low-carbon steel and accelerating the decarbonisation of the steel industry. However, this transition must be designed in a way that the competitiveness of the entire European value chain, including downstream industries such as electric motor manufacturing.
CEMEP 6 Annex I part 2 (i) (a) existing text: (i) in the first paragraph, point (a) is replaced by the following: ‘(a) the technical data sheet or user manual supplied with of the motor, unless a QR code is supplied with the product with a link to the information.’; proposed modofication: “with of” should be replaced by “with”.

CEMEP emphasises the need for regulation at the system level to maximise energy savings and support the European Unions climate objectives, while welcoming the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation as an opportunity to realise the considerable energy saving potential of motors.
