The BDP welcomes the Commission’s proposal for a regulation on the regulation of NGTs. It takes into account scientific evidence and recognises the need for a differentiated regulatory approach for organisms from NGTs. In particular, for plants that do not differ from conventionally bred, the current GMO regulation does not constitute an adequate legal framework.

The Federal Association of German Plant Breeders (BDP) has for more than 75 years pooled the interests of its 130 members, which are agricultural and horticultural breeding and trading companies in Germany. The sector, which is mainly small and medium-sized, is very innovative, with around sixty breeding companies operating their own breeding programmes and a 16 % R & D (R & D) quota.
