In the opinion of the Federal Chamber of Physicians, there can be no objection to the European Commission’s proposal to increase the minimum training periods for the nine specialist titles in question. If the specialist titles in question exist in Germany, the periods of further training are five and six years respectively.

The proposal for a regulation provides for enhanced competences of the EMA in the event of an EU health emergency or major event threatening the supply of medicinal products. In this case, EMA will be able to monitor the supply of much-needed medicines and medical devices.

The proposal goes in the right direction as it respects the competences of the EU and the Member States (MS). EU action must always be based on, or prepare for, a serious cross-border threat to health. Health Security Committee: Coordination by the Health Security Committee (HSC) and the IPCR mechanism has proved insufficient in the wake of the Covid-19 crisis.
