As a major European sports broadcaster, beIN SPORTS considers that the Directive still provides a relevant and balanced framework. At this stage, the priority should not be a comprehensive revision, but rather a strict, consistent and transparent enforcement of existing provisions, particularly those essential to the financing of sport and to fair competition in the audiovisual market.
The sports and audiovisual sectors contribute over 5% of the European Unions total GDP and 5% of the continents employment. They foster economic growth and cultural and social cohesion. Online piracy of sports events affects an entire ecosystem, with direct implications for employment, taxable income, reinvestment in content, and grassroots sports development.
