The Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) welcome the European Commission’s initiative to further develop the legal framework for European electricity networks as part of the European Network Package. As one of Austria’s largest electricity consumers with a significant share of electricity purchased from the public grid, ÖBB is particularly dependent on an efficient, stable and cost-effective electricity infrastructure.

All in all, the revision of the present directive is welcomed by the ÖBB including the extension of the scope of the CT Directive. ÖBB very much welcomes the goal to shift transport to more sustainable means of transportation such as rail and to provide incentives to support this modal shift.

Indeed, rail has a key role to play in making EU transport more efficient and sustainable, in line with the goals of the EU’s sustainable and smart mobility strategy.

Europe-wide cooperation is indispensable in the implementation of this concept.
