In some cases, the word has often been interpreted as meaning that a maximum of 50 % of the open-air runs may be covered, together with exceptions for sows and piglet rearing.

As the Federal Association for Organic Pig Farming, we are concerned about the health of our piglets if conventional protein feed (potato white) which is currently permitted can no longer be used. Although currently only 3 % of this feed in Germany (2024: 5 %), the amino acids of potato protein contribute a large proportion to the supply of piglets.

Proposal to amend Implementing Regulation (EU) 2020/464 splitting the minimum indoor area and the minimum outdoor area for rearing piglets into two sections of weight to date: In accordance with Annex I to Implementing Regulation (EU) 2020/464, after weaning up to 35 kg live weight piglets have at least 0.6 m² of indoor area and 0.4 m² of outdoor surface available.

Delegated act to extend derogation for non-organic protein feedfiled 29 Aug 2026source

As the Action Alliance Bioschweine Deutschland, we have been defending the interests of German and European organic pig farmers for many years. Together with other stakeholders, we believe that it is not possible to supply piglets up to 35 kg exclusively with organic feed without endangering animal health.
