Regulation (EU) No 540/2014 sets EU type-approval sound level limits for new M1–M3 and N1–N3 vehicles and replacement silencing systems, with phased limits in Annex III. It applies from 1 July 2016; AVAS for hybrid/electric vehicles required in new types by 1 July 2019 and all new vehicles by 1 July 2021. Directive 70/157/EEC is repealed from 1 July 2027.
