Evaluation of the EU-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement

The Japan Business Council in Europe (JBCE), a cross-sectoral organisation representing companies of Japanese parentage active in Europe, recognises that the EU-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) has significantly contributed to deepening trade relations between the two regions over the past five years.

Fecc acknowledges the consultation on EU-Japan trade agreement evaluation and welcomes the opportunity to provide input. In this consultation we would like to raise the following points: 1. Strengthened Bilateral Cooperation: Fecc endorses the initiative to enhance relations between the EU and Japan, particularly in the areas of trade, investment, and sustainable development.

The Italian dairy sector evaluates the agreement above all for its opportunities for commercial penetration in Japan, with a specific focus on cheeses, the real driving force of the sector exports in the Italian panorama.

The EU-Japan trade agreement has significantly enhanced economic ties, particularly through its focus on geographical indications (GIs), which protect European products linked to specific regions. GIs are crucial for European trade, accounting for about 20% of EU food and beverage exports.

Eurogroup for Animals notes the evaluation assessing the impact of the Economic Partnership Agreement (JEEPA) with Japan after five years of implementation. We hope the findings of this evaluation will help the EU and Japan fully activate the cooperation mechanism on animal welfare, which has yet to be utilised. JEEPA only started to be implemented in 2019, but some effects can already be witnessed.

This was a great mission, and well organised. We visited several very interesting companies to get a better view on their progress and technological evolution, as well as met multiple interesting local people during the business forums through which we had followup leads afterwards. At the same time the mission also allowed me to get to know local Luxembourg business people better in friendly environment.

During the first months following the entry into force of the FTA, Fedustria was asked many questions from its members about the origin criterion to be indicated on the proof of origin. The reference to the origin criterion is requested only in the EU-Japan FTA and not in other free trade agreements.

The objectives of teh agreement are to liberalise and facilitate trade and investment and promote a closer economic relationship between the EU and Japan.
