In order to maintain EU's leadership in fusion energy, we need to: 1. address most urgently the financing issues along the complete value chain. US-based fusion companies have access to much more abundant private equity, and financing in general, while the funding for EU-based fusion companies is less abundant. Abundancy buys speed for the time-to-market.
A European Fusion Strategy is a roadmap to position Europe as a leader in fusion energy development and maintain the leading position it has held for the past 40 years with knowledge from machines like the Joint European Toras (JET). Europe has a globally leading position in fusion research, built on the excellence of its research institutions and the sustained involvement of a strong and innovative industrial base. The European leadership must be preserved and reinforced in front of the urgent need to develop sustainable energy solutions.
Fusion energy is widely acknowledged in Europe as a cornerstone for a sustainable and low-carbon energy future. On behalf of the Faculty of Nuclear Sciences and Physical Engineering at the Czech Technical University in Prague, we are grateful for the opportunity to provide feedback to the European Commissions Call for Evidence on the development of an EU Fusion Strategy.
The attached report summarises the main takeaways from the F4E Roundtable 2025, which took place in Barcelona on 12-13 June 2026. The Roundtable brought together more than 200 representatives from EU policy, industry, SMEs, start-ups, fusion laboratories and other Big Science projects to discuss issues linked to the future of fusion in Europe.
MAIRE Group advocates the adoption of a harmonized legislative framework to support nuclear fusion, but at the same time calls for improvements to the EU nuclear fission regulations, specifically by removing obstacles to innovative modular reactor technologies.

The European Fusion Association (EFA), a Brussels-based, non-profit industry association established in October 2024, represents 60 European companies spanning the entire fusion value chain. Our mission is to foster collaboration across science, finance, and policy to accelerate the transition of fusion energy from the laboratory to the electricity grid.
Fusion energy is neither clean nor short-term or medium-term available in terms of resource use, energy needs, investment commitment and environmental impact. Accordingly, fusion is not a means against earth heating. For six decades, science has not been able to solve the technical difficulties associated with fusion and it appears that the list of problems is becoming longer than shorter.

Achieving commercial use of fusion still requires considerable effort, which can be accelerated by focusing resources rather than spreading them. A renowned nuclear fusion research institute. There are companies in North Brabant that may want to invest in the EU Fusion strategy. It is important that sufficient European programmes are available to them with financial resources to be able to receive support.

Pilot supply chains from Laboratory scale to industrial production need a new kind of business strategy. A Spin-In, a private organized longer workbench for research institutions can help to close the gap. Fusion Start-Ups have to concentrate on the machine, big industry is not interested in deep-tech developments. Research organizations are not looking for production and supply chains.
